Prepositions express the relation between the word group the preposition is part of and another element in the sentence. Prepositions are almost always part of a word group with a noun as the main word.
Examples of prepositions are: aan, achter, bij, op and voor.
De pen ligt op de tafel. (The pen is on the table.)
Ik ben achter de deur. (I am behind the door.)
De man staat voor het raam. (The man is in front of the window.)
